Gold IRA Minimum Investment: Stated Minimum vs Economic Minimum
A company's stated minimum tells you whether it will open an account at a certain size. It does not tell you whether the account is economically sensible for your situation.
Minimums are company-specific
Some dealers publish a minimum while others ask prospective customers to confirm current thresholds. American Hartford Gold currently states a $10,000 minimum initial contribution for its self-directed Gold IRA. Birch Gold currently tells prospects to confirm its current minimum with a specialist.
The economic minimum is different
Suppose two accounts pay the same flat annual custody/storage amount. Those fixed dollars consume a larger percentage of a smaller account. That does not create a universal minimum, but it does mean percentage cost should be calculated.
Do not size an account to qualify for a promotion
A free-metal or fee-waiver promotion can be part of the economics, but it should not dictate how much retirement money you move. First choose an appropriate allocation and structure; then compare offers.
Questions to ask
- What is the minimum opening purchase?
- Does a promotion require a higher qualifying amount?
- Are annual fees flat or asset-based?
- What spread applies at my expected order size?
- Can I see the fee schedule before transferring funds?
