Gold IRA Fees & Costs: Setup, Storage, Spreads and More
Gold IRA cost comparisons are easy to distort if one provider quotes only an annual account fee while another includes storage, or if neither figure shows the dealer's metal spread.
The cost stack
| Cost | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Account setup | Is it one-time, waived, or charged by the custodian? |
| Annual administration | Flat or asset-based? What services are included? |
| Storage | Segregated or non-segregated? Flat or value-based? |
| Dealer spread / markup | What is today's cash purchase price and today's repurchase price for the same item? |
| Transactions / distributions | Any wire, sell, shipping or in-kind distribution charge? |
Why the spread matters
A dealer can advertise low annual fees while earning more through the difference between its selling and buying prices. Ask for both sides of the quote on the same product at the same time. The CFTC specifically warns about overpriced metals, high commissions and hidden fees.
Current provider examples
Noble Gold currently publishes an $80 setup fee and a $275 annual Gold IRA amount consisting of $125 custodial services and $150 segregated storage. Augusta's current public example shows a $50 custodian application fee, $125 annual custodian maintenance and a sample $100 annual non-government depository storage fee. These are not apples-to-apples until you also compare metal pricing and account terms.
Calculate an all-in figure
For each provider, write down first-year account charges, recurring annual charges, the purchase price of the exact metal, an indicative same-day repurchase price, and any sale/distribution costs. Compare dollars, not adjectives.
