IRA-Eligible Gold: What Gold Can a Gold IRA Hold?
Not every gold coin or bar belongs in an IRA. 'IRA-eligible' is a tax-law and custody question, not simply a marketing label.
The IRS framework
Publication 590-A lists metals among collectibles and says an IRA investment in collectibles is generally treated as a distribution. It then provides exceptions for specified Treasury-minted coins and certain gold, silver, platinum and palladium bullion.
Coins versus collectibles
Some coins can fall within the statutory exception, while many collectible or numismatic products do not. The CFTC warns that rare/collectible coins can carry higher markups and lower liquidity, a separate economic concern from IRA eligibility.
Confirm eligibility before trading
Ask the receiving IRA custodian—not only the selling dealer—to confirm that the exact product is acceptable for the account. Keep the trade confirmation identifying the item, quantity and price.
Eligibility does not equal suitability
A product can be permitted in an IRA and still be expensive, illiquid or inappropriate for your objectives. Compare premium/spread, storage and expected resale process in addition to eligibility.
