Physical Gold vs Gold ETFs: Ownership, Liquidity & Costs
Physical bullion and exchange-traded gold exposure can both respond to gold prices, but they are different legal and operational structures. The label 'gold ETF' is not a substitute for reading the specific product documents.
Physical gold
You transact in actual bars or coins and must account for dealer spread, storage, insurance and sale logistics. Inside an IRA, custody and eligibility rules add another layer.
Exchange-traded products
These can be bought and sold through brokerage accounts during market hours, often with transparent market prices and stated fund expenses. Their legal claim on underlying assets, redemption rights and tracking mechanics depend on the specific product.
Liquidity comparison
Exchange trading can make small adjustments easier. Physical gold can also be liquid, but the realized price depends on the dealer/market and the exact product being sold.
Which is closer to your objective?
If the objective is simple gold-price exposure inside a conventional brokerage account, an exchange-traded vehicle may be operationally simpler. If the objective specifically requires qualifying physical metal held within an IRA, the self-directed structure addresses a different preference.
