Gold IRA vs Physical Gold You Hold Yourself

Updated September 12, 2026

Both routes can provide exposure to physical precious metals, but they solve different problems. A Gold IRA is a retirement-account structure; personally owned bullion is direct taxable ownership outside that IRA.

Important: This is general education, not individualized investment, tax or legal advice. Precious-metals prices can rise or fall, and self-directed IRAs can involve dealer spreads, custody, storage, administration and tax rules.

Control and possession

Personally owned bullion can be stored under arrangements you choose. IRA-owned qualifying metals are subject to IRA rules and custody requirements; the tax advantages of the account come with constraints.

Taxes and retirement rules

A Gold IRA operates within an IRA framework, so rollover, distribution and other retirement-account rules can apply. Personally held gold does not become an IRA simply because it is intended for retirement.

Cost structure

Both routes can involve dealer spreads. A Gold IRA may additionally involve custodian and depository fees. Personally held bullion can involve insurance, secure-storage or transaction costs depending on how you manage it.

Which questions decide the choice?

Do you want retirement-account treatment or unrestricted personal possession? Are you comfortable with an IRA custodian/depository structure? How do all-in costs compare? And what is the planned liquidity path if you need cash?
