401(k) to Gold IRA Rollover: What to Check First

Updated September 12, 2026

A 401(k) to Gold IRA transaction begins with your current plan's rules. A dealer cannot make a plan distribution available when the plan itself does not permit it.

Important: This is general education, not individualized investment, tax or legal advice. Precious-metals prices can rise or fall, and self-directed IRAs can involve dealer spreads, custody, storage, administration and tax rules.

Can the 401(k) distribute the money?

Workplace plans have plan-specific distribution rules. IRS guidance says different distributable events apply to different plan types, and the plan document determines when a distribution will be made. Start with the plan administrator or summary plan description.

Direct rollover mechanics

If you are eligible for a distribution, a direct rollover can send the amount directly to an IRA trustee. IRS guidance says no tax is withheld from the amount paid directly to the receiving trustee; amounts paid to you can trigger mandatory withholding rules for eligible rollover distributions.

Do not choose the metal before the account path is clear

Sales conversations can jump straight to coins. Instead, confirm the receiving IRA, custodian, depository, account fees and plan mechanics first. Then evaluate the exact metal and dealer price.
